Former World Footballer of the year George Oppong Weah has been elected as the new President for Liberia after a run-off.
Oppong Weah is believed to be in a comfortable lead with counting still ongoing beating his compatriot Joseph Boakai.
The difference in the polls will make it impossible for the ex-AC Milan and PSG star miss out on the seat as the leader of the West African country.
He will be replacing Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in a contest that completes the country’s first democratic transition of power in more than 70 years.
He remains the only African to have won the FIFA World Footballer of the year.
The ex-Sportsman shifted to Politics after retiring from footballer. He however missed out in his first attempt to contest for the Presidency but was able to upgrade himself in government which has ultimately helped him achieve one of his greatest ambitions.
The Confederation of African Football CAF have congratulated the former African player of the year for winning the elections.
